10 February 2012 - Back to the Coast

After a nice spell inland at the Grampians we are heading back to the coast. We are heading to a place called Lake Mombeong between Nelson and Portland on the Victorian South Coast. The campsite was recommended to us by a couple we met at Meningee and we decided to try some bush camping for a couple of days.

A quick pack up as unfortunately the CD stacker in the Kluger has packed it in. We need to get to the toyota dealer in Hamilton to see if they can fix it. The iPod and radio options are still working but the kids music is on CDs so it is a disaster as far as they are concerned. Anyway, turned out the dealer in Hamilton could not do anything in a hurry so we will get it looked at when we get closer to Melbourne.

The drive to Lake Mombeong was  great for animal spotting. Kangaroos, wallabies, emus, wedge tail eagles and echidnas, great to see so much wild life  on a relatively short trip. We arrived at the campsite to a sign that said 'Do not set up camp without paying for a camping permit in Nelson'. We had expected an honesty box at the site, similar to most of the National Park campsites in NSW and SA. The 20km drive to Nelson did not appeal, so we set up camp anyway and managed to get the ranger on the phone, we will sort him out over the weekend.

The site is excellent, very quiet, next to a freshwater lake and a small walk to the beach. Emily and Lachie filled their buckets with centipedes, which were everywhere and we also caught a few small fish with some bread and the butterfly net down at the jetty.

We cranked up the barbie and after dinner got the kids to bed as soon as we could.
