Saturday 21 January 2012 - More bikes and wine

Today was stage 5 of the TDU starting in Mclaren Vale just south of Adelaide. The circuit involved 5 visits to the town of Wilunga so we headed down there for the day.

We did not rush in the morning and managed to catch the peleton heading out of Wilunga after their first loop. The excitement of seeing the 'flying doctors' (Emily speak for the TV helicopter) and the nee naws set the scene for the day. Just on the outskirts of town an enterprising family were offering $5 parking on the vacant block next to their house so we left the car there and headed into town.

We did not have to wait long and the tour entourage started heading into town and followed by the cyclists. We managed to pick up a discarded Powerade bidon from one of the cyclists and this has now become Emily's favourite drinking bottle.

After watching another circuit of the main street, we headed part way up the big climb out of town to see the cyclists suffering as they headed up to Wilinga Hill. It was great to be so close to the riders and we got a much better look at many of them as the peleton broke up on the climb.

After the race had finished we decided to visit a couple of the Mclaren vale vineyards. We went to Mclaren Ridge, where the kids behaved disgracefully and we left as soon as we could. Quite disappointing as it was a beautiful spot. We then headed to Chapel Hill where Clare headed in for some tastings with the kids banished to the car.

We got back to Adelaide just after 5pm and got caught out by the early Saturday closing hours of the local supermarkets. With no mince for spaghetti bolognaise available, we had to settle for fish and chips.

Early bed for the kids, punishment for their dreadful behaviour at the vineyard. This left ample time for us to finish off a bubbly the owner of Mclaren Ridge gave us as we were his last visitors for the day, followed by a 2008 Jacobs Creek Reserve shiraz that was rather good. The quality of all of the vineyards we have visited and wines available has been outstanding.
