11 January 2012 - Trains, Diggers and a bit of art

It was a windy night. Clare thought the tent was going to blow away or a branch from the tree next door fall on us but it held up fine. The weather was quite cool in the morning, courtesy of the wind that served to keep the temperature very mild all day.  We visited the tourist information centre and then headed across the road to the Train Museum. This was excellent with old trains from various years open for the kids to run through as they pleased. Lachie was in train heaven and we even managed to get him out of the museum without a tantrum, he was so worn out having been on so many trains.

We then headed up to the 'Line of Lode' Miners Memorial. This is situated at the top of the huge slag heap that separates North from South Broken Hill. When you see the size of the slag heap it makes you wonder if there is actually anything left underneath holding up the houses on the surface! There is a cafe at the top with great views across Broken Hill and beyond. The site is also covered with old mining equipment from years gone by, diggers, lifts, loaders, yet another fantastic play ground for the kiddies.

Broken Hill is a young boys paradise with trains, diggers, dump trucks all over the place. After an exhausting morning we could not keep Lachie awake and he fell asleep in the car before we could get him back to the campsite.

Later in the afternoon we headed out to the Living Desert sculptures and on the way called in to Pro Hart's gallery. This was definitely worth a look and he certainly got through a huge amount of work before his death in 2006.

The Living Desert sculptures reside on a small hill about 10kms outside Broken Hill. They were the result of a sculptors symposium during April-May 2006. There are about 10 sculptures in total, hewn of sandstone shipped in from Wilcania. After a picnic dinner and some time for the kiddies to chase the local kangaroos and harass some grasshoppers, we headed up the hill to watch the sun set over the desert before heading back into town.
